5 Reasons To Choose A Long-Endurance Fixed-Wing VTOL UAV

Published September 20th 2018

When selecting a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) to complete the mission of your project you’re going to need to take into consideration a number of factors. The first and most likely one of the most important factors to consider is how long will you need the drone to be in the air. No doubt there are other factors to take into consideration like payload capacity, VTOL (vertical take-off and land) capabilities and many others. We take a look at five reasons why you should be choosing a long-endurance, fixed-wing UAV for your operation. Time is Money Multi-rotor drones are a lot slower than fixed-wing drones, which travel at a high speed, so getting a job done quickly isn’t usually an option, especially if you need to cover a large area of land. Whether the drone is being used for construction, maintenance, agriculture or public safety, having the drone in the air for longer periods of time saves a lot of time as opposed to bringing it down every h... Drones up to mischief

Published August 9th 2018

Recent media attention surrounding the use of drone technology to commit criminal acts provides the greatest example of why authorities need to be alert to this new and developing area. Prisons provide the best example. Drones have caught the media’s negative stare with drones described as a ‘game changer’ for the common drug dealer. Drugs and phones are the most sought after commodities behind bars; drugs acquire the status of gold bullion whilst phones allow the shrewd criminal to manage and coordinate illicit affairs remotely. In December 2017, a gang of 10 who smuggled phones and drugs into prison were handed lengthy prison sentences as reported by the BBC: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-42341416. They were responsible for smuggling £1million of these illicit items into prison using drones. It was established that the group had conducted some 49 drone flights, although the figure could be much higher. It was due to the good fortune of wildlife cameras s... Read More »

What is a drone anyway?

What is a drone anyway?

Published July 19th 2018

It's a question that might get you laughed out of any self-respecting futurologist’s dinner party, but in a world where drones are poised to have a tremendous impact on our daily lives, it is one that bears asking.  When most people think of drones, they see a little plastic quadcopter flown around by their neighbour’s annoying kids, or the menacing fixed wing aircraft delivering controversy to the Middle East, but neither of those paint a complete picture of what the word ‘drone’ actually means, and knowing why that is the case, as well as what that complete picture actually entails, is vital to understanding the nature of the drone industry at large.  At its most basic, dictionary-derived level, a drone is an unmanned vehicle guided by either remote control or onboard software. The big takeaway from the first part of that definition is the word ‘vehicle.’ While most of the headline-grabbing, future-seeking drone applic... SalusUAV Develop a Sense and Avoid System

Published June 20th 2018

Stream video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_QATwPXCQ8&t=40s To fly Beyond Visual Line Of Sight, regulatory bodies demand that a drone has a ‘Sense and Avoid’ system so that it can detect other aircraft and avoid collisions with them. The absence of any effective system means that currently, if an operator wants to fly BVLOS, special permission must be requested from the regulator and the airspace must be sterile. This process carries with it an onerous time and admin burden for businesses. It also limits the possible applications that drones can undertake. This situation is unsustainable if we are to manage the predicted millions of commercial drones entering the market. Rather than trying to redesign the Unmanned Traffic System, SalusUAV has approached the problem by looking at the drone. We have produced a game-changing “Sense and Avoid” system called MROC. Just like human pilots, drones need to be able to make independent decisions.... Read More »

Inkonova secures first commercial order for the Batonomous system, from LKAB

Published June 11th 2018

On the 23rd of April 2018, Inkonova’s Batonomous received the first commercial service purchase order for a scanning mission using the Batonomous system (autonomy for aerial robotics without light or infrastructure -GPS, beacons, video, etc..) from LKAB Malmberget. The PO came after a prior demo of the system there in late February this year, the demo was conducted in Gällivare in Northern Sweden, beyond the Arctic Circle. LKAB owns the biggest underground iron ore mine in the world, located in Kiruna. The service mission is scheduled for the first half of June 2018. The mission aims to survey zones deemed difficult or impossible with the previous state of technology. The inclination, the terrain of the shaft, the danger of collapse and falling rocks, the absence of light, GPS, vision and prior knowledge, all make it a challenge to survey and map these areas. Nevertheless, the lack of data from these zones cause weeks of delay, and a multitude of... Read More »

Aerial Monitoring Solutions: Drones By Africa, For Africa

Published June 5th 2018

Adam Rosman wanted to build rockets like Elon Musk. Instead, he makes drones that can handle Africa’s harsh conditions. As a boy, there was never any doubt what Adam Rosman would do when he was older. “Aviation fascinated me. My friends and I used to build model rockets and fly them at the school fields. I then decided I wanted to be an aeronautical engineer,” he says. Rosman studied aeronautical engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand, in Johannesburg. “When I finished, I always wanted to do rocketry, Elon Musk type of stuff.” He worked at a South African rocket design firm but the company went under. “I think it was just the wrong time, they couldn’t get money,” says Rosman. Back then may have been the wrong time to build rockets, but Rosman seemed to have perfect timing when he started Aerial Monitoring Solutions (AMS) in 2013. The company designs custom drones for the commercial market. “These a... Read More »

Inkonova: Batonomous™ — Reporting back

Published May 22nd 2018

“If there is one thing that we learnt from the months of testing in underground mines, it is that to hit the true potential for drone solutions underground, and given the constricted, dark and GPS-deprived nature, we definitely have to make them autonomous. Autonomy is a technical requirement dictated by the business requirement of usability and consumerability. That is, to sell, we need to make it easy for anyone with little training, to pop up the screen and controls, and start navigating the drone without the prohibiting level of piloting skill required for such environments. This ease of operation has been achieved for open-air applications, where light, space and GPS are abundant. But wherever they are not, there lies our current frontier, and it is requiring another level of technology development..” This is to report back on the technology we at Inkonova started developing back then… Flashback to Fall 2016: TILT Ranger, the first custom drone solut...
